Sankey Park
We hope you enjoy Sweet Home's beautiful parks. City Parks are open from daylight to an hour after sunset. Exact hours vary throughout the year.
In 1939 our first developed city park was simply called "Sweet Home City Park." The park boasted many amenities, including swings, teeters, chinning bars, hobby horses, stoves, small tables, and one large table, which enabled 125 to be seated at one time. The furniture and play equipment were rustic, constructed of hewn logs and poles.
After the passing of long-time City Councilor & Park Commissioner W.S. Sankey in 1966, the Sweet Home City Council changed the name to Sankey Park.
The park has gone through many changes throughout its existence. For example, 1989 saw the addition of Weddle Bridge, originally built over Thomas Creek in Scio. Even though the community added this bridge 50 years after the park's founding, it has become synonymous with Sankey Park.
Sankey Park is now 16.85-acres which includes a newly installed (2020) playground structure, historic Weddle Bridge, a clubhouse, gazebo, picnic tables, a BMX course, restrooms, and trash cans. The area is largely grass turf with many mature fir trees in the area providing ample shade for visitors.
